At the recent annual convention of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Department of Alabama, held at the Huntsville Marriott, Camden’s Irby Savage-Sam McNeill Auxiliary Unit 84 was awarded a certificate and cash prize in recognition of Outstanding Support of the Poppy Program. The members of Unit 84 would like to thank all those who contributed generously to us while we were distributing poppies on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. It is because of your willingness to support our efforts that we were able to raise just over $1,000. Thirty percent of that is sent directly to the state American Legion Auxiliary and is used for services in the VA hospitals across the state. All the money in the unit’s Poppy Fund is used for support of veterans. Recent contributions have been made to a local veteran who needed financial help, to the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette, to the local Legion Post to help pay for a new roof for the Legion Hut, and to Operation Heal Our Patriots, a ministry developed by Samaritan’s Purse to meet the unique needs of military couples as they cope with life-changing injuries. The American Legion Auxiliary, founded in 1919, is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization.
