The West Alabama Wild completed its summer season with a tournament win in the open division at the USSSA Gulf Coast National Championships on July 23rd in Gulf Shores. The Wild went undefeated in both pool and bracket play to bring home the USSSA National Championship. In seven games the Wild gave up 17 runs while scoring 33.
The Wild opened pool play with a 4 to 0 win against the Pacers from Southside, AL. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Lane Braeden Burbage scored on a passed ball followed by a timely single by Allie Newberry to score run number 2 for the Wild. The Wild was able to put two more across in the bottom of the 4th with the help of a lead-off triple by Taylor Smith. Also, with hits in the game were Sierra Myers and Elly Brown each with a single.
The next pool game was a battle with the Kraze from Florence, AL, that ended in a 4 to 4 tie. The Wild took the lead early with a two run first inning with singles from Sierra Myers, Reagan Roberts, and Allie Newberry. The Kraze rallied in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 4 runs to take a 4 to 2 lead. The Wild was able to answer in the top of the 3rd scoring two runs when Bria Brown singled to score Sierra Myers. Brown was then able to score on a ground ball hit to the right side by Allie Newberry. The Wild held the Kraze in the bottom half of the inning to hold on for the tie.
The Wild’s final pool game was against a familiar opponent, the South Alabama Elite from Mobile, AL. The Wild got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first scoring 3 runs with singles from Sierra Myers and Macie West.
