Mable L. Thompson made a quiet transition from his life on November 17, 2016, at Baptist Memorial South Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.
Mable was preceded in death by her loving son David M. Thompson. She was the oldest grandchild of the late George and Dolia McIntosh.
She leaves to cherish her memory; her husband, Henry C. Thompson, Sr. (Coy, Alabama); daughters, Sandra Thompson Sanders and Lizzie D. Thompson (Cleveland, Ohio); son, Henry (La Keshia) C. Thompson, Jr. (Selma, Alabama); five grandchildren, Richard, Preston, Lisa and Alicia (Cleveland, Ohio) and Henry III (Coy, Alabama); two great-grandchildren, J’Shon and Jullian (Cleveland, Ohio); mother, Lizzie L. Hollingsworth (Birmingham, Alabama); mother-in-law, Lula M. Thompson (Coy, Alabama); four sisters, Christine Lane (Lincoln, Alabama), Doris J. James (Upper Marlboro, Maryland), Jeanette James (Dallas, Texas), and Dr. Floretta (Clarence) Dortch (Talladega, alabama); two brothers, Sylvester (Glenda) James (Munford, Alabama) and Donald Hollingsworth (Hempstead, New York); step-brothers and sister, Gerry (Columbus, Ohio) and Michael (Uniondale, New York), Hollingsworth and Fritzie Owens (Ozone Park, New York); four brothers-in-law, Jessie, Michael, John, and Allen; five sisters-in-law, Lillian Gathright, Ella Gathright, Sennie Smith, Mildred Robinson, and Shirley Nettles; nine aunts, Ethel (George) Hutchins, Mary Ida Spencer, Frankie (Clarence) Boswell, Dr. Dolia (Rev. Horace) Patterson, Betty Lee, Alberta Reynold, Lorenza McIntosh, Ellen Davis, and Lucille Montgomery; five uncles, George (Lena) McIntosh, Marion McIntosh, Melvin (Brenda) McIntosh, Clifford Stallworth Sr., and Essitt Ratcliffe; special family member, Dasy Spencer; and devoted friend, Mrs. Ora G Colston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mabel graduated from Camden Academy in 1969. She attended Springhill College in Mobile and Alabama State University in Montgomery, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master’s Degree in Special Education and certifications in Early Childhood Education and Administration.
Mable began working as a teacher’s aide at Tates Chapel School and Coy Public School. In 1971, she was employed at Wilcox County Training School as a teacher’s aide.
Her educational journey as a kindergarten teacher began in 1977 at Camden Academy. She worked throughout Wilcox County in the special education field. Her final position as an educational professional was as reading coach at J.E. Hobbs Elementary and Pine Hill Elementary.
Mable retired from the teaching profession in May 2010 after a 41-year career teaching the children and some adults in and around Wilcox County.
Her Repast was held at Camden School of Arts and Technology on Saturday, November 26, 2016 with Interment at Tates Chapel Cemetery in Coy, Alabama.
Final arrangements entrusted to Christian Memorial Funeral Home in Camden, Alabama.
