Lady Wildcats Tip-Off for State bragging rights today

The Wilcox Academy Lady Basketball Seniors entered the AISA Region 2 finals for the fourth straight year, losing the previous three games. Trailing 22-19 at half the Lady Wildcats went on a 13-4 run to give them the lead and a chance at the Region Title. Leading 45-43 with 4 seconds remaining a long shot by Pickens Academy’s Allison Latham fell short and the Wildcats had their Region Title. The Lady Cats advance to the Elite Eight where they will play Coosa Valley Academy Wednesday at 3:00 at the Montgomery Multiplex. By defeating Pickens Academy in the Finals, they ran their record to 20-1 for the season. The Cats were led in scoring by Beth Anne Burford and Sydney Sessions with 16 points each. Nancy Jordan had 7 points, Emily Smith had 4 and Cannon McKelvey scored 2 points. On Friday, the Lady Wildcats defeated South Choctaw Academy for the 3rd time this season 43-40. Trailing 22-19 at half the Lady Cats again outscored its opponents in the third quarter 14-6. Wilcox was led in scoring by Burford with 17 points for a total of 33 points for the tournament. Smith added 9 points while 4 other players also scored for the Lady Cats. “It was great to see these Seniors and the rest of the players get their Region Championship,” said Coach Wendell Barr. “most of our games have been fairly easy this season and it was nice to see them handle the pressure presented in the region tournament, and coming from behind to win both games.” Burford was named the most valuable player for the tournament. Callie McGraw and Sessions were named to the All-tournament team. On Thursday, the boys saw their season come to an end losing to Pickens Academy in the first round 54-31. Never able to find their shooting touch. The Wildcats fell behind 25-11 at halftime. The Cats were never able to cut into the Pirates lead during the last half losing by the final margin. Wilcox was led in scoring by Nolan Fendley with 19 points, no other Wildcat had more than 2 buckets. The Wildcats finished the season winning 3 of their last 5 games but fell to 5-15 with the Pickens loss. “The boys played hard the whole season,” said Barr, “and we really got better as the season progressed.”
