Ellen Pettie Sargent

Ellen Pettie Sargent, a native of McWilliams, Alabama (Wilcox County) and a resident of Columbus, Georgia died on Thursday, February 18, 2017 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia after surgery to treat complications due to a heart attack.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia with Rev. Robert Beckum officiating. Visitation services were held immediately following the Memorial Service in Stockwell Hall for family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Clem and Willie Mason Pettie. Ellen is survived by her husband Bryan Blackburn Sargent, two sons, Chris Sargent and Rick Sargent (Amy) and three granddaughters, Layna, Suzanna, and Eliza Sargent.
Ellen received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of West Alabama (Livingston University); Master’s Degree in Education from West Georgia College and a 6 year Certification in Counseling from Troy State University. Teaching was truly her calling as she spent 33 years in the capacity of educator, teacher and counselor. Ellen began her teaching career at Parris Island School where her husband Bryan was stationed after his return from Vietnam. The majority of her career was spent in the Muscogee County School District where she worked at JD Davis and Clubview Elementary Schools.
Not only did her life consist of a teaching career, Ellen was a very active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where she enjoyed her Tuesday afternoon Soul Sisters Bible Study. Other community activities included being a member of the Junior League, Green Island Garden Club, and Green Island Book Club.
Ellen never met a stranger, always had a kind word for everyone, and will be truly missed by not only her immediate family, but also cousins and extended family members.
