Wilcox Central High School re-opens Natatorium

Wilcox Central High School Natatorium Renovation

The general scope was to renovate the existing Natatorium to provide a place to teach children and adults in the community to swim. The renovation included renovating and recoating the pool, providing new pool equipment and boilers, providing a new roof and renovating the adjacent locker rooms, corridor, office and storage space. The project also entailed installation of new roll-up ventilation doors. A handicap-accessible toilet was added, in addition to a chairlift into the pool to provide access for elderly or handicap users. The toilets near the cafeteria in the existing high school building were also renovated as part of the project. Work on the project began in July of 2016 and was completed in early 2017. The total project budget was a little more than $900,000.

The Wilcox County Board of Education received a $683,500 community facilities loan and a $50,000 community facilities grant to renovate the natatorium at Wilcox Central High School. The funding was part of the $4.9 million awarded by the USDA in 2015 to support projects that would protect public safety and health, improve water and wastewater infrastructure and create expanded economic opportunities in rural Alabama.

Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. (GMC) served as the project architect and Johns and Kirksey, Inc., was the general contractor.

I enjoyed taking the swimming classes when I was a student at WCHS, and I obtained my first job as a lifeguard at the natatorium. I am glad that WCHS and all of the public schools of Wilcox are back on track to providing the best environments for learning for our children.

Its just sad that the stigma of racism impedes the progress of Wilcox County. Image what our schools would be, the resources we could gather, and even greater students we would produce if there wasn’t an us and them!
