Berniece Henson Powe, age 98, of Camden, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2017 at Camden Nursing Facility.

Funeral services were held at Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home in Camden on April 10, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Chris Wells officiating. Burial followed at Coy Cemetery with David Primm, Meek Primm, Sam Hickman, Steve Ward, James Phillips, Raleigh Wilkerson, Henry McIntosh, and Harvey Crawford serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Powe was born in Wilcox County to Chester Dare and Lula Curry Henson on August 11, 1918. She attended Wilcox County schools and was a homemaker. Later she became a seamstress for Solomon Brothers and Vanity Fair. Her last employment was Camden Cleaners.

Mrs. Powe was a member of Camden Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the Gloria Thurman WMU group for several years. Mrs. Powe loved God, her family, and her friends. She was always a happy, joyful person who was known as a “giver’ whether it was something from her garden or her kitchen. She enjoyed taking care of others during her life. An avid reader, Mrs. Powe often read through the Bible several times in a year.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Alva Powe, Sr., sons Dr. Thomas Alva Powe, Jr., and Mack D. Powe, grandson Brad Powe, brother Dr. Curtis Henson, sister Lois Hestle, and nephew Jim Hestle.

She is survived by daughters-in-law Judy Powe of Camden and Linda Powe of Lula, Georgia, granddaughters Beth and Kathy, and nieces Marjorie, Judy, Marcia and Jane.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Coy Cemetery at Community Neighbor Bank, P.O. Box 518, Camden, AL 36726.

Mrs. Powe’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Camden Nursing Facility for the loving care they provided for her over the past six years.
