Elder Stanley Leroy Champion, a native and lifelong resident of Anne Manie, Alabama, was the oldest of three children born to Sophieline Bonham Champion and the lete Leroy Champion on January 31, 1955. Death sealed Stanley’s lips on September 2, 2017, in his beloved community of Anne Manie.

Elder Champion accepted Christ as his eternal savior at an early age and entered into the care of Arlington United Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Reverend Claude C. Brown. Elder Champion was a faithful, loyal, and lifelong member of Arlington Presbyterial Church. He served faithfully in several capacities–as an Adult Sunday School teacher, as the Superintendent of Sunday School, an Elder of the church, kitchen coordinator and head cook, the clerk of session for Arlington Presbyterian Church, and Chairman of the United Presbyterians of Wilcox County.

Stanley was a Master Mason in the Goshen Lodge #530 where he served as the secretary. Stanley was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising cattle, gardening, and riding up and down County Road 32.

Stanley’s education journey began at Epiphany Lutheran School in Arlington, Alabama. In 1972, he graduated from Pine Hill Consolidated High School in Pine Hill, Alabama. After graduating from high school, he matriculated at Alabama A & M University in Normal, Alabama. Stanley received his Bachelor’s Degree in History Education in 1976. After graduating, he returned home and began his teaching career in the Wilcox County Public School System where he remained for 37 years. Stanley started his career at his alma mater, Pine Hill Consolidated High School. He finished his career in the halls of Wilcox Central High School. During his tenure at Wilcox Central High School, he served as the chair of the History Department. He took pride in his educational journey by educating the boys and girls of Wilcox County. After retirement, Stanley continued to play an active role on campus and in his community. Stanley would return to games and volunteer his services in the concession stand and prom to “hang the ceiling.”

Preceding him in death was his father — Leroy Champion and wife — Evie Dale Champion.

Cherishing his memories are two daughters – Sheena Champion of Birmingham, Alabama, and Jacqueline (Craig) Vannostrand of Detroit, Michigan; his mother – Sophieline Champion of Anne Manie, Alabama; one sister – Marilyn (Lofton) Holloman of Nashville, Tennessee; one brother – Darcy (Takkesia) Champion of Birmingham, Alabama; fie aunts – Rebecca Jennings of Nashville, Tennessee, Queene Powell of Boston, Massachusetts, Estella Thompson of Camden, Alabama, Gwendolyn Bohman of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jerusha Bohman of Lansing, Michigan; two nieces – Alyse Champion of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Darci Champion of Birmingham, Alabama; two nephews – Ray Holloman of Nashville, Tennessee, and Lofton Champion Holloman of Chattanooga, Tennessee; five brothers-in-law – Ardie (Mary nell) Dale, Bodie (Annie Lee) Dale, Jr., Aundrea (Lillie V.) Dale, Elroy (Carolyn) Dale all of Rose Bud, Alabama, and Torris (Annie) Dale of Camden, Alabama; five sisters-in-law – Mildred McWilliams of Pensacola, Florida, margaret V. Dale of Bronx, New York, Celia (Dane) Lee of Yonkers, New York, Cassandra Dale of Riley Crossing, Alabama and Jaye Dale (Moses) of Rose Bud, Alabama; five devoted friends 0 leslie King, Ralph Ervin, Sr., and Kenneth Southall all of Anne Manie, Alabama, John Terry Southall of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Charles Fisher of Knoxville, Tennessee; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
