Mrs. Menda Gamble Pettway, widow of Joseph Pettway, went to be with the Lord, on November 24, 2017. A native of Consul, Alabama, Mrs. Pettway resided in Alberta, Alabama for over 60 years. A member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess, and Sunday school teacher. A graduate of Selma University and Alabama State Teacher’s College (now Alabama State University) she taught in Marengo and Dallas Counties before becoming co-owner of Pettway’s Place.

She and her husband operated that business, a cattle farm, and laundry-mat, for over 60 years. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she was the chartering treasurer and served Psi Omicron Omega Chapter for four (4) years and served the Order of Eastern Star, St. Mary’s Chapter #367, as treasurer, for twelve (12) years. A loving, supportive Mother to Jo Celeste, Joseph, Jr., Melvin, Shirley; grand- mother to Joy, Antione, Michael, Kimberly, Adam Clayton, Naadira, Jamal, Anthony, Marissa, Erica, and Kingston; Her proudest accomplishment was raising a strong knitted family committed to God, each other, their community, and success.

The OES Burial Service is scheduled for Friday, November 01, 2017, 5:30 p.m. at Lewis Brothers Funeral Home, in Selma; the AKA Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will follow at 6:30 p.m.; both ceremonies are open to non- members. The Funeral service is 1 p.m., Saturday, December 02, 2017, at Mt. Sinai M.B. Church, County Road 29, in Alberta, AL.
