Reverend Walter L. Sheffield was born October 9, 1930 in Coy, Alabama to Walter and Maggie Dell Bridges Sheffield. He passed away peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Regency Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Agnes Hargeaves of Hattiesburg, MS; son Morris (Faye) Sheffield of Coy, AL; daughter Barbara (Jimmy) Vick of Sedan, AL; daughter, Geneva (Aubrey) McKinley of Coy, AL and son, Fred (Janet) Sheffield of Hattiesburg, MS; siblings Emmie (Sam) Bender of Monroeville, AL; Sallie McGraw of Coy, AL; Mary (Marion) Maness of Monroeville, AL and John (Betty) Sheffield of Monroeville, AL; 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Maggie Dell Sheffield and brothers Fred Sheffield and William Sheffield.

After attending Wilcox County High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He was a surveyor in Mobile, AL. He served as a deputy with Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department in Camden, AL. Walter was a business owner for a variety of stores in AL. At one time, he was the Pastor, Constable and store owner all at the same time in Vredenburgh, AL.
Walter was ordained as a minister on November 6, 1983. He became the pastor for Vredenburgh Baptist Church in Vredenburgh, AL in 1983 and retired in 1999. Coming out of his retirement he accepted the invitation to pastor at Mexia Baptist Church in Mexia, AL until 2005. He then went on to pastor at Popular Springs Baptist Church in Popular Springs, AL in 2005 until his final retirement in 2015.

Visitation was held at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home in Monroeville, AL on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. with funeral service following at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, graveside services were held at New Providence Cemetery in Coy, AL.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made in Walter Sheffield’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at stjude.org.
