Ms. Jessie Mae Bufford was born April 14, 1926 in Camden, Alabama, the second child of four, to the parentage of Mr. Joseph Benson Bufford, Sr. and Mrs Willie Kennedy Bufford. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptised at an early age. Ms. Bufford attended elementary and high school in Camden, Alabama and graduated from Camden Academy.
She completed junior college at Alabama State University, Mobile branch. She then went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Alabama State University, Montgomery. She later did graduate work at Spring Hill College, Mobile.
Ms. Bufford began substitute teaching in 1948 and her full-time teaching career in Wilcox County began in 1953. Her career spanned 43 years. She began teaching at Duncan School in Rosebud, then went on to teach at Tate’s Chapel in Coy and Camden Academy Middle School in Camden, where she retired in 1991.
Ms. Bufford was always a willing and eager participant in church, school, and community activities. Until health issues prevented her from attending, she was a very active and faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church, and served wherever she was needed.
On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, Ms. Bufford answered the call of God and stepped into his embrace and the sweet rest reserved for the righteous.
Among those who preceded her from this earthly life into eternity are her parents: Willie and Joseph Benson Bufford, Sr.; two sisters: Bessie Mae Bufford and Beatrice Bufford Davis; one brother, Joseph Benson Bufford,11, and one great niece, Ursula Lilley.
Among those who remain to cherish her memory as they await their time to join the realm of the righteous are: a brother-in-law, Alphonso Davis of Killeen, Texas, one niece: Leonore (Leo) Johnson of Brownwood, Texas; three nephews, Leonard Marshall of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Joseph Benson (Heidi) Bufford,111 and Larry L. (Loretta) Bufford of Killeen, Texas; two great nephews: Eric (SteFanie) Johnson of Concord, California, and Michael Johnson of Austin, Texas, four great nieces: Jerilyn(Curtis) Johnson-Emerson of Alexandria, Virginia, Tiffany Marshall of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Vanessa Bufford and Saphonia Price of Killeen, Texas, two great, great nieces, Naomi Johnson of Concord, California and Destiny Lilley of Killeen, Texas; four great, great nephews: Artrez Price of Killeen, Texas, D.J. Lilley and Faijon Lilley of Killeen, Texas and Stefan Jones of Concord, California; two great, great, great nephews: Brandon Lilley and Kaden Lilley of Killeen, Texas; three special cousins, Frances Blackmon of Camden, Alabama, Daisy Moore of Mobile, Alabama, and Wilbur Hercules of Oakland, California, and a host of extended family members, loved ones, former students and friends.
