Cartledge Weeden Blackwell, Jr.

Cartledge Weeden Blackwell, Jr., departed this life on June 7, 2019, after a lengthy illness. He was the son of Cartledge Weeden Blackwell and Ruth Adler Blackwell and the grandson of William Dunham Blackwell and Vivian Bratton Blackwell and of Lee C. Adler and Cora Loeb Adler. He was a descendant of plantation families in Dallas County, Alabama. He attended Selma public schools, the University of Alabama, and the University of Alabama School of Law. Cartledge was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma, where he served as a warden and vestryman.
He was predeceased in death by his parents and his daughter Marion Cook Blackwell. He is survived by his wife Sara Crum Cook Blackwell, daughter Virginia L. Blackwell, son Cartledge W. Blackwell, III, sister Coralee B. Jones, first cousins Lee Gayle Elmore, Gaines T. Blackwell, and Walton Callen Cunningham, nephew George E. Jones, III, niece Gayle E. Jones, and a number of other cousins.
A memorial service was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma on June 9, 2019, at 1:30 p.m., followed by a graveside service at the Cook Family Cemetery on Cook Hill at Possum Bend, Wilcox County, at 3:30 p.m., with The Reverend Henry Hudson officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma, Alabama, or the Cook Hill Cemetery Fund.
