Peyton Daniel Burford, Jr. March 5, 1931 – October 9, 2019
Peyton, youngest child to Peyton Daniel and Willella (Golston)Burford, grew up on Clifton Street in Camden, Alabama alongside his older sister Ione (Sibley) and numerous cousins. He graduated as Salutatorian from Wilcox County High School in 1949 and promptly started his studies at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Peyton was very active while on “The Plains”. He was a brother of the Kappa Alpha Order social fraternity, a member of the ROTC, and a member of the Blue Key Honor Society.
Upon graduating with a degree in Agricultural Science, Peyton, entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Second Armored Calvary.
Thankfully times were peaceful and Peyton returned to the family farm where he joined his father in the cattle and timber business. In 1964, Peyton married his life-long love of 55 years, Gerry (Seales). Peyton and Gerry have two sons, Danny (Missy) and Chris (Sara), and six grandchildren: Peyton and Beth Anne, (Danny and Missy) and Christopher, Gerry Ann, Jayne Ellen, and Mary Peyton (Chris and Sara).
Peyton was a member of Camden United Methodist Church where he was the youth leader, Sunday school teacher, member of the church choir, and served in several positions and on several boards. The United Methodist Church awarded Peyton the Harry Denman Award for Evangelism. Peyton’s desire for others to know Christ inspired him to join the prison ministry and to support missions in India. He was also a member of the Blue Lake Emmaus Community.
Peyton was an Eagle Scout and his love for scouting led him to be a leader for Boy Scout Troop 94 in Camden. Both of Peyton’s grandsons were awarded Eagle Scout Honors.
Peyton was involved within the community through the Camden Exchange Club and received the Annual Golden Deeds Award. He was also member of the school board.
Peyton died peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October, 13, 2019 at 3:00 at Camden United Methodist Church, visitation followed at 2:00 in the church fellowship hall.
