Charles Rufus Owens Sr., age 78, passed away at his home on Thursday, June 25, 2020. He was born in Old Texas, Alabama, on October 4, 1941. He is survived by his devoted wife and high school sweetheart, Martha “Tutt” Fore Owens. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 23, 2020. He was predeceased by his parents, James Rufus “Red” and Louise Brantley Owens, brothers Julian Wilson Owens and James Perry Owens, and sister Dianne Owens Stallworth. He leaves behind a son and namesake Charles Rufus (Kim) Owens Jr., of Old Texas, AL; daughters Frances G.(Jimmy) Cook, of Camden, AL, and Susan Owens (Sam) Curtis, of Helena, AL; seven grandchildren Charles Miller (Allison) Owens, Charles Garrett Gaston, Thomas Deaton Owens, Reagan DeVenne Curtis, Sarah Elizabeth Owens, Winston Grant Gaston, Grayson Owen Curtis; step-granddaughter Mary Kristian Cook (Judson) Perkins; step great-granddaughter, Collins Wren Perkins; sisters-in-law Sylvia Owens and Sharon Owens, and brother-in-law Dennis Stallworth.
Charles was successful and well-respected in the cattle and timber industries. Charles was honored as Outstanding Cattleman of 2018 by the Monroe County Cattlemen’s Association. As a selfless, hardworking provider for his family, his work fulfilled his life-long passions for cattle and timber which will live on through the influence he had on so many others with whom he freely shared his knowledge of and love for these businesses. He was also a founding member and faithful supporter of Monroe Academy where he served on the board for many years.
A graveside service was held Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Jason Pittman presiding and Johnson Funeral Home of Monroeville directing. Charles was a third-generation member of Jenkins Chapel that the Owens family was instrumental in founding. He was an active member whose faithful support helped his small church thrive. He looked forward to the annual Homecoming at Jenkins Chapel where he enjoyed welcoming back many family members and old friends who came for worship service and looked forward to brother Julian and his fried chicken.
