Grover Alva “Al” Gibbs Jr. of Camden, AL passed away Thursday January 21, 2021 at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Panama City Florida. He was 77.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Grover Alva Gibbs.
He is survived by his wife Billie Strother Gibbs and their children Sara Kate Shorter(Peasley) of Americus GA, Strother Gibbs(Patty) of Camden, Al Gibbs III (Hallie) of Mountain Brook and Ashley Herbert (Chris).
He also leaves eleven grandchildren; Ashley Shorter Adams(Chris), Kate Shorter Currie (Fuller), Anna Strother Gibbs, Sara Kate Gibbs Fuller (Jones), Alden Gibbs, Rae Evelyn Gibbs, Strother Gibbs, Emma Herbert, Bradley Herbert, Lane Miller (Jenny) and Melody Perryman (Stover). Surviving great grandchildren are Jackson Thornton, Marley Thornton, Mary Stover Perryman, Camilla Lane Miller and Charles Miller. He is also survived by his brother Bill Gibbs (Kaye) and sister Dana Spells Morse (David).
Al served as a volunteer coach for many years at Wilcox Academy coaching both men’s and women’s sports. His players loved and adored “Big Al” as he was affectionately and respectfully known. He coached his teams to many playoffs and championships while instilling the value, character and hard work.

He was a member of Canton Bend United Methodist Church.
The family held a private memorial service Monday, January 25, 2021 at 11:00AM at Canton Bend United Methodist Church. The Gibbs family will receive friends at their home in Canton Bend at guests convenience during the weekend and in the days ahead.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Wilcox Academy Athletics where he invested so much of his life, P.O. Box 1149, Camden, AL 36726.
