Louise McLain Williams, 94, has passed from us, crossing the river Sunday afternoon, February 21, 2021. The angels could be heard singing on the other side. She was born Louise Ellen McLain in Robertsdale, Alabama, in Baldwin County, on June 21, 1926. After high school, she rode the train to Montevallo where she earned a degree in home economics, which led to a teaching job in Camden, Alabama, in 1947. Soon she was courted by Joe Williams, leading to a long, happy, and fruitful life in Camden. She was a devoted member of the Camden Methodist Church, loved reading, flowers, birds, and discreetly helping others, some with encouragement, some with advice soft or stern, some with hard resources, always with candor tempered with empathy. She accepted the flaws of others and rarely spoke ill of anyone, yet always expected better work. On her refrigerator was a magnet that read: “No matter her age, a mother watches her middle-aged children for signs of improvement”.
As did her eldest son Joseph “Joey” Clark Williams, Jr., she succumbed to congestive heart failure, but had already lost most her physical capacities—vision, hearing, mobility—to aging, though her mind and her sense of humor persisted until the end. She will also join her husband Joseph Clark Williams, who passed in 1990, and her brother Ezell McLain, 98, who left us a few months ago.
She will be survived by her son Robert “Bobby” McLain Williams, a physician, and his wife Linda Shumaker Williams, four grandchildren (Hannah, Ellen, Sarah, and Lindsey Williams), numerous nieces and nephews, innumerable friends, and a long roster of cousins (her paternal grandfather sired twenty children!). One of her surviving cousins, Ira McLain, resides in Camden.
She will be laid to rest on February 24, 2021, in the Camden City Cemetery, alongside her husband and son at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Brian Dovey officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home of Camden, AL directing. Memorials can be made to Camden United Methodist Church. She will be missed, but not likely soon forgotten.
