Charles “Chip” Porter Schutt, Jr.

Charles “Chip” Porter Schutt, Jr.

On May 23, 2021, Charles “Chip” Porter Schutt Jr., 78, of Chadds Ford, PA, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his children and dogs.
Chip was the son of Charles Porter Schutt and Phyllis Moxham du Pont. Born in Wilmington, DE, he attended Tower Hill School, Cardigan Mountain School, Tabor Academy, and the University of Delaware. He joined the Air National Guard while beginning his career at Laird, Bissell & Meads in 1968. He spent the next 32 years taking care of his clients’ financial lives, ultimately retiring from Morgan Stanley.
He avidly pursued Katharine “Puss” Draper Schutt until she finally relented. They were married in 1967 and over the next 48 years they raised three children, Porter, Jake, and Kate, never missing a single one of their concerts or sporting events. That streak continued with their grandchildren—Ryann, Tatum, and Bridget (Porter and Laurisa) and Jasper, Elsa, and Luke (Jake and Hilah).
Chip was renowned for his smile, the twinkle in his eye, and his curiosity about others, reveling in their lives and relishing their stories. He was a generous giver, dedicated to the success of many organizations including The Pilot School, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, and The Wilmington Club. He always carried a harmonica in his pocket and was ready with a song to entertain any crowd. He loved a sunrise over a frozen duck marsh as much as he loved a side of smoked salmon or a wheel of brie cheese. Many of his outdoor adventures, hunting and otherwise, happened at Galio Farms in rural Alabama with lifelong friends.
“The Captain,” as many called him, had countless nautical miles beneath his keel. He was a member of the Cruising Club of America, the Northeast Harbor Fleet, and the Vicmead Yacht Club. At a young age, he made his first transatlantic crossing. Many friends and family joined him on “Safari” as he sailed to Bermuda and up and down the eastern seaboard, the galley fully stocked by his first mate Puss.
His warmth impacted many and will forever be remembered.
Chip was predeceased by his wife, his sisters Caroline “Cookie” Brown of Unionville, PA and Katherine “Jerry” Streitwieser of Pottstown, PA, and he is survived by his sister Sarah “Sally” Harrison of Greenville, DE.
