John Perron “Sonny” Wetherbee, Jr (83) passed away on September 14, 2022. Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 14 at 11:00 am at the Camden Cemetery in Camden, AL, Pastor John R. Boles will officiate.
Sonny was born in Thomaston, AL on March 3, 1939. The family moved to Camden in 1947 and established the family business, Wetherbee Department Store. After graduating Wilcox County High School, Sonny continued his education at Auburn University and then graduated from Troy State University. He returned to Camden to join the family business. He married his high school sweetheart, Eugenia Webb, and raised four children. Sonny served in the Army National Guard, as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church and on the boards of the Alabama Sheriff’s Boys Ranch and Wilcox Academy. In his leisure, he enjoyed riding in Field Trials, hunting, raising bird dogs and Sundays on the Alabama river with family and friends. Sonny’s career took him to Fairhope, Huntsville and Prattville. He retired as an examiner for the State of Alabama Banking Department in 2006 and enjoyed living on Lake Jordan until the death of his wife in 2011. He moved to Wetumpka, AL and spent his remaining years traveling throughout the United States. He had a special fondness for his time in Highlands, NC.
Sonny is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Eugenia Webb, his parents John P Wetherbee, Sr and Charlie Dial Wetherbee, brother Edward Lamar Wetherbee and son in law, John Miller. He is survived by his four children Lynne (Jim) Jenkins, Graham (John) Miller, John Perron Wetherbee III, and Madalyn (Ward) Pate. His pride and joy were his nine grandchildren: Sydney, Sam and Abbey Jenkins; Mary Madalyn, Clyde and Maggie Miller, and Lily, Stella and Piper Pate. Other survivors are his sister, Dena (Bill) Leitner, and brother Charlie (Gloria) Wetherbee, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Big Oak Ranch,250 Jake Mintz Rd, Gadsden, AL 35905 or Wilcox Academy, POB 1149, Camden, AL 36726 in memory of John Wetherbee.
