Sara Ann Black Winters, a resident of Beatrice, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Crowne Healthcare of Greenville on Friday, February 24, 2023 at the age of 90. She was born on October 28, 1932 to John D. Black and Mabel Celesta Spearman Black. She graduated from Beatrice High School on May 22, 1950, and became engaged to her future husband, Samuel Emory Winters, on graduation night. They were married on September, 1950 and remained happily married until his death in 2006.
Sara was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, Sam “Pa Pa” Winters, brother Pete Black and sister Mable Lee Byrd. She is survived by her three sons, Sam Winters, Jr (Susie) of Greenville, AL; John S. Winters (Lynn) of Monroeville; and David Winters (Michelle) of Kennesaw, GA. She is also survived by two sisters, Martha Barns of Dallas, TX and Barbara “Bob” Webb of Jacksonville, FL.
Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren, who called her “Nee Naa”: Emory (Becky) Winters of Huntsville, AL; Amy (Jacob) Bohannon of Prattville, AL; Mary Taylor Winters of Monroeville, AL; Anthony (Kenzie) Winters of Kennesaw, GA; Kaitlyn and Luke Winters of Kennesaw, GA; and three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Nora, and Samuel Winters, IV of Huntsville, AL.
In addition to her family, Sara worked for many years at McMillan Bloedel Paper Mill in Pine Hill, AL, and Alabama River Pulp in Claiborne, AL. She was a member of the Beatrice Garden Club and a proud member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Alabama Chapter #36. In addition to gardening, she enjoyed cooking, traveling with her devoted husband, and going to flea markets and estate sales, and working on her family genealogy. She was a member of the Beatrice Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir, was a member of the hospitality/food committee, and served on Bible studies and numerous other ministries and programs. She also enjoyed entertaining, family reunions and her church family. Everyone loved her infectious laugh, which she inherited from her Mama, “Granny Black”.
A Celebration of Life Service was held at Johnson Funeral Home in Monroeville, Alabama on Monday, February 27, 2023 at 11:00AM with Reverend Tom Lindsey and John Lewis Winters conducting the service. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. A graveside service was held at New Hope Baptist Church, in Natchez, AL.
