Christopher Willis Johnson, 42, a former resident of Hybart, died unexpectedly on March 14, 2023, at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Graveside services will be on Friday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at the Bell’s Landing Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hybart. He had struggled with the effects of severe diabetes for several years.
Mr. Johnson was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 8, 1980, the son of Perry Johnson and Linda Foley Johnson. He spent most of his childhood in Georgia, attending elementary school in the Savannah area, and middle school in Claxton. As a teenager, he moved to Hybart and attended Wilcox Academy, graduating in 1998. He had spent vacations and holidays at the Hybart Homeplace from his earliest years. His grandmother was Jane Hybart Rosborough, whose Hybart and Stallworth ancestors were among the first settlers of Monroe County in the early nineteenth century.
After high school he worked as an apprentice boilermaker. He later attended and graduated from the South Carolina Fire Academy in Columbia and was a fire inspector in Peoria, Illinois, and Florence, South Carolina.
In 2002 he met Dawn Marie Stirrat of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and they quickly became a couple. They married in 2017.
As a child and a teenager and an adult, Chris was easy-going and affable. He was quick to make friends, loyal and loving to his family, and devoted to all animals, especially his pets. He enjoyed video games, music, and working with his hands.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn Stirrat Johnson, Colorado Springs; his father and stepmother, Perry and Paula Johnson, Pensacola, Florida, a brother, Matt Johnson (Laura Vaughan), Savannah, Georgia; a stepbrother, Scott Downs (Heather), St. Petersburg, Florida; an aunt, Jane Ellen Clark, Hybart. Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Kylie Stirrat, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two step-grandchildren; a niece and two nephews, and his maternal grandmother, Ardath Bigham, Northport, Alabama. His mother, Linda Foley Craven, died in 2022. In addition, he leaves behind many Hybart and Johnson cousins in Alabama and in the Pensacola area.
