Tom Sadler
Tom Sadler, born on April 19, 1946, in Camden, Alabama, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, friendship, and intellect. He is survived by his nephews, Cobb Hoskins Sadler and Leon Y. Sadler, IV, as well as his sister-in-law Dana Sadler. He held a particularly strong bond with his great-niece and great-nephews, Ellen and Leon Sadler, twins currently attending the University of Alabama, and Margaret Sadler, a junior in high school.
A proud graduate of Camden High School, Tom was the talented leader of the band “The Off Beats,” where he was recognized by his long-time friend Pat Nettles, founder and CEO of CIENA Corp, as the standout musician of the group. Tom’s intellectual pursuits were equally impressive; he was one of the “smartest Sadlers” with degrees from MIT in Mathematics and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Alabama, along with another PhD from LSU. Tom taught Mathematics at the University of Texas, Austin.
Beyond academia, Tom treasured his friendships, church community, and a deep love for jazz music. He played in and financed jazz bands, sharing this passion with others. His life was enriched by his friend groups in Austin, including those from jazz, church and dinner circles. On a beautiful Alabama day, December 21st, his local friends and family gathered in his hometown of Camden, AL to celebrate his life, a perfect day for someone who loved hiking and travel.
Tom will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, humility, big heart, and capacity for forgiveness. His spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services were held at University Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX on Saturday, January 18th at 2 pm.
